Very well written and a thorough examination of where we are today in the conservative/liberal divide, theologically speaking. As a United Methodist pastor, I find this history very helpful regarding some of the issues we are facing within our own denomination, which is encapsulating this very tension with evangelicals taking a hardened stance and liberals becoming more vocal in their disagreement with current positions, especially regarding LGBTQ-related issues. I’ve been reflecting for quite some time about how what we call “evangelical” today is what we would have called “fundamentalist” as recently as 15 years ago. Seeing this history playing out in real time is helpful in naming what is happening.
